Tips for Growing Your Podcast Audience Beyond Social Media - January 2024 Newsletter

Hello again!

Even though we’re well into January, since this is my first newsletter of the new year, Happy New Year to you and I hope you’re enjoying 2024 so far.

Even though I’m in the later stages of recovery from my hysterectomy*, I’m still slowly coming back to podcast education and mentoring as time and energy allows.

While taking time off, I began brainstorming ways to restructure my strategy sessions for 2024. I wanted to be able to share a ton of knowledge while also keeping these consulting sessions affordable for Creative Independent Podcasters.

Favorite Podcasting Tips from 2023 & Looking Ahead to the New Year — December 2023 Newsletter

Hello again!

Can you believe we're nearing the end of another year? I'm at that stage of December where I'm looking back over 2023 to take stock of what I've done to see what worked in my business (and life, in general) and what didn't.

This was the year I tried incorporating these monthly newsletters into my workflow. And it's been one of the best decisions — thank you for allowing me into your inbox, for writing back, signing up for strategy sessions, buying me coffees, and letting others know about this newsletter!

This was certainly one of my highlights of the last year 🙂

Another highlight of my year was trying to write more blog posts over on the EPodcastProductions.com website, many of which were inspired by people replying to the newsletter or common questions that come up in Strategy Sessions.

I went through my posts from the year and shared some tips from them below. Maybe I'll turn some of them into a book (future plans, perhaps?)

Without further ado, let's get into our 2023 Podcasting Tip Round-Up!

What is a Creative Indie Podcaster?

When I first started podcast consulting, I was convinced I could provide help to almost anyone in their podcasting journey. But over the years, I've realized that the clients I enjoy working with the most and who tend to seek me out most frequently are Creative Independent Podcasters.

And many of them don't even know they fall into that category — which makes sense, considering when most people hear, "I'm a podcaster," perhaps the idea of a tech bro talking head is the first image that comes to mind.

And while that unfortunate stereotype isn't far off from what some podcasters aspire to be, that didn't seem to be my client base or who I was writing about podcasting for.

Last year I sat down and decided to get really, truly clear on who I was writing and curating my blog and newsletter for and I listed all the adjectives I could to describe how I pictured my readers to embody. The ones that stood out the most and what I felt directly called to my purpose in podcasting was Creative & Independent.

Some People Rest After Surgery — I Started A Podcast! — November 2023 Newsletter

First off, thank you to everyone who sent their well wishes for my surgery and recovery! It’s going GREAT and I’m feeling EVEN BETTER than I did on some of my worst Adenomyosis flare days 🙂 It meant so much to hear from many of you and really speaks to how supportive the Indie Podcasting space is.

Speaking of which, can I tell you a secret?

Podcast Horror Stories + Find Your Interview Flow — October 2023 Newsletter

Happy Halloween!

It’s been quite a few weeks since the last newsletter! I’ve been trying to send one out every month and usually, I get it out within the first few weeks.

But this month, I found out I’ll be having surgery mid-November and I’ve been scrambling behind the scenes to get ahead for my awesome clients so the newsletter and blog posts have taken a backseat for the time being. (More about my surgery on my Instagram)

Starting Your Podcasting Journey: 10 Tips for Your First Episode

Back when I started podcasting in 2015 and I told people, I was typically met with, “What’s a podcast?”

Fast forward to today and I don’t get that as much.

In fact, I think the more common reaction when I tell folks I work as a podcast editor and consultant is, “Oh! I’ve had an idea for a podcast myself!”

And some have even purchased the equipment, bought the courses, or went to the conferences to learn, but somehow can’t get past that planning stage to press that big scary RECORD button.

Sometimes I’ll have someone book a call with me and they’ll tell me everything they’ve done so far, and then wait expectantly as if I have to give them the “go-ahead” to officially start.

Here’s a secret, future podcaster …

Podcasting Collabs, Recording Tips, and Ramping Up for Fall! — September 2023 Newsletter

It’s that time of year when podcasting is ramping up again now that summer’s on its way out and I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to get out my fall-scented candles and cozy up to the microphone. As it seems to happen every September, new shows are coming out, favorite shows are returning, and big announcements are coming out in the podcasting space!

One of the biggest news stories lately has been the collaboration between SquadCast and Descript

Be a Tease!: Get Your Audience Excited for More 😉 — August 2023 Newsletter

Welcome to the dog days of summer, which was named for the time in late July when the star Sirius would appear in the sky. The Romans referred to it as "days of the dog star."

Can you tell I'm in full research mode for my book, as I wrote about last month? I feel the need to write the story behind everything I can think of lately. You can also see what I've been up to with my monthly montages I've been doing over on Instagram.

Story Time: Your Podcast Audience Will Change (And That's OK!)

About 11 years ago, I found my first podcasts and I fell in love. I've talked about the story before so I won't go too deep into it, but the short version is when I was moving out during my divorce, and I didn't have cable set up in my new apartment, but I had internet so when it came to entertainment while I was unpacking, I didn't have much else but my phone.

So I opened the newish purple app called iTunes (now Apple Podcasts) and began exploring what was available. I had a friend who listened to podcasts and I thought it was cool that there were these great audio shows available for free, so I tried it out.

Does Podcast Listening Dwindle in the Summer? — July 2023 Newsletter

I tried keeping it light and simple in this month’s newsletter.

That’s been my intention with every previous newsletter, but there always seems to be a lot to talk about by the time four-ish weeks go by and I can’t wait to gush to you!

But in case I actually manage to keep it short (spoiler: I didn't) and you’re looking for additional tips for creative independent podcasters, check out last month’s newsletter.
